The Air Jordan V “Grape” itself is considered to be one of the earliest “Lifestyle” colorways of the Air Jordan, veering off the lane of classic Chicago Bulls colorway and opting for a stylish purple and green. It was the highlight of the Air Jordan Flight Collection of Fall 1990, which featured matching athletic apparel that Jordan himself modeled in the official look-book, but the absence of a Chicago Bulls connection meant that Michael couldn’t be spotted in the shoes too often. Only random promo shots and a Wheaties box appearance remain as some of the few "Grape" moments for His Airness, but throughout the years the unique color arrangement has managed to establish itself as an icon of the entire Air Jordan legacy.
In case you were wondering about the contractual sneaker obligations for other members of the Maybach Music group, this should clear things up. We’re going to guess that French Montana is a free agent, as this shot has him in the heralded 2013 Air Jordan 5 "Black Grape" release rather than any Reebok fare. Jordans seem to be the default sneaker of choice for rappers not affiliated with any particular brand, so we’re not exactly surprised to see the BX spitter with Jumpman sneakers on feet. The Air Jordan V "Doernbecher" will release on Saturday, September 28th. As you have likely already read, the sneaker is a tribute to former Doernbecher patient Isaac Arzate, who tragically passed in April of last year. Personal details embedded in the design include Isaac’s baseball jersey number 9 on the left shoe and his basketball number 31 on the right, his dates of birth and passing on the inside of the tongue, as well as words borrowed from a poem he wrote the day before his passing. After recovering from open-heart surgery, Isaac was invited by OHSU Doernbecher to be part of the 2012 Freestyle program. During his rehabilitation from surgery, he began sketching designs for an Air Jordan V Retro, highlighting his interests and experiences. He also became well enough to don his jersey and watch his basketball team from the bleachers, occasionally getting to shoot around during breaks in the game. Then in April 2012, 12-year-old Isaac tragically suffered a second heart attack, and did not survive.”
With help from his family, the Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher” completes the design that Isaac was working on by using his original sketches and others that his parents had found. The shoe is detailed in dedication to Isaac, showcasing his #9 baseball jersey number and #31 basketball jersey number. His initials, date of birth and date of passing tag the tongue lining, while glow-in-the-dark details highlight the silo. Words from a poem Isaac wrote just a day before he passed grace the upper, amplified by black light ink. Lastly, each pair comes with a flashlight to celebrate Isaac’s love of video games.
Air Jordans 5 were an instant hit thanks to a high flying rookie as well as one of the best marketing campaigns put together by Weiden and Kennedy. Jordan shoes have been the top selling signature basketball shoe that Nike has ever produced.? In addition to the signature Air Jordans, Jordan Brand has a major presence in the basketball and lifestyle market. Despite the fact that Michael Jordan retired from basketball in 2003 (for the 3rd time) Air Jordans are still the top selling models for many sneaker retailers. The legacy of Michael Jordan lives on with the release of new Jordans each year and re-releasing retro Air Jordans 2014.
